Form I-485 is used to apply for lawful permanent resident status (green card) while you are present in the United States. This is known as "Adjustment of Status."
Who Can File Form I-485?
You must be eligible for an immigrant visa category and be physically present in the U.S.
Immediate Relative of U.S. Citizen
Spouse, unmarried child under 21, or parent (if petitioner is 21+)
Family-Sponsored Preference
Other family relationships with approved I-130 and current priority date
Employment-Based
Approved immigrant petition based on job offer or investment
Diversity Visa Winner
Selected in the DV lottery with current priority date
Asylee/Refugee
One year after asylum granted or refugee admission
Special Categories
VAWA, Cuban Adjustment, Registry, and other special provisions
